Global Citizenship for Social Development: Universal Curriculum Design and
ICT-Facilitated Intercultural Learning Environments for All Students
[ SDG #1, #4, #5, and #17]
The use of Universal Design for Learning and Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) enable
more accessible and cross-culturally collaborative learning environments for all learners, including those
with disabilities, both in the U.S. and globally. This side event explores how education can contribute to
reducing poverty and enhancing human life and what kind of teaching and learning best address the needs
of all learners. The panelists discuss theory-based framework to apply universal curriculum design that
engages various learners and cultural diversity and promotes intercultural competence of global citizenship.
By introducing best practices of using ICT and emerging technologies in the United States, Africa, Latin
America, and Asia, the panelists recommend universal and global learning environment for all students
including girls from different cultures and diverse socioeconomic backgrounds.
The key aspects this panel addresses are:
1. Principles and application of Universal Design for Learning
2. Curriculum design framework and global virtual learning to develop intercultural competence
3. Education and technology for children in Brazil, and refugees and migrants in Latin America
4. Academic support and finance for Ghanaian girls and those with special needs.
5. Storytelling e-Book collaboration between Ghana and a school in Newark, N.J.
6. UNESCO’s perspective: quality education of using ICT, arts and music for youth and humanity
The NGO Committee for Education, Learning and Literacy (NGO CELL) proposes an informational
presentation and panel discussion on education for social development, co-sponsored by UNESCO, Society
for Psychology Study of Social Issues (SPSSI), Manhattan Multicultural Counseling (MMC), IVECA
Center for International Virtual Schooling, and Legion of Goodwill-USA.

Elizabeth Akua-Nyarko Patterson

Elizabeth Akua-Nyarko Patterson is the founder and executive director of the Girls Education Initiative of Ghana (GEIG). GEIG’s mission is to provide academic and financial support for girls including applicants with special needs, so they may access secondary, higher education, and professional opportunities. Since 2014 GEIG has supported twelve students in the Ashanti and Greater Accra regions of Ghana in their transition from basic school to junior high school. Five of the twelve girls are now enrolled in senior high school and the remaining seven will fully transition by the 2017/2018 academic year.Ms. Patterson holds an MPA, master’s in public administration from NYU Wagner School of Public Service where she specialized in non-profit management. Ms. Patterson’s research includes but not limited to Education of Marginalized People: access to education for disabled/differently abled students in K-12 institutions in South Africa, A comparative qualitative study on single sex and co-Ed schools in New York City, Strategic Planning: City Year New York, and Performance Measurement and Management: Junior Achievement of New York.Ms. Patterson is the 2014 ReconnectGH-Education Entrepreneur, was listed among the 50 most influential people under 40 in Ghana in 2015, presented in 2015 at Tedex Accra, was a member of the World Economic Forum’s Global Shapers Community- Kumasi Hub from 2014-2015, and the 2015 Vlisco Brand Ambassador for Ghana. She is also a 2016 fellow of the Young African Leadership Initiative, Regional Leadership Center-Accra, Yali RLC.

Bismark Aryee is the silver category winner of the 2015 Los Angeles Documentary film festival Best Student Film (Silver) (www.docla.org). Mr. Aryee holds a bachelor of fine arts in film and TV production. He has a diploma in graphic and web design from Tema secondary school (2010). Mr. Aryee has professional experience in directing, editing, graphic design, and cinematography. He is the team leader of Filifilli studios and co-founder of The Cinema Review GH.

Anita Altman

Anita Altman, Festival Co-Founder; Chair of National Advisory Committee ReelAbilities: NY Disabilities Film Festival In her almost 3 decades working at UJA-Federation of New York, Anita helped put disabilities on the agenda of New York’s Jewish community, founding a Task Force on People with Disabilities, and with philanthropic support, expanded and transformed programming for people with disabilities and their families served by UJA-Federation member agencies. Her vision was that a film festival sharing the lives and aspirations of people with disabilities could help raise the consciousness of the New York community about our common humanity and the value of each person, without regard to his or her ability or disability. She is chair of the ReelAbilities national board.

Cecilia B. Ogude

Cecilia B. Ogude, Founder of WINAFD and Vice President with JPMorgan Chase. Cecilia has over 12 years of professional experience including managerial positions with Accenture, Dentsu, and McKinsey & Company. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics from New York University (NY) and Bachelor of Engineering in Electrical Engineering from Steven’s Institute of Technology (NJ). She is an active volunteer with NYCares, Upwardly Global, Big Brother Big Sister, Junior Achievement, SEO Scholars, VSO, etc. and at her leisure, is an avid reader, traveler, and a long distance runner who has completed 2 marathons and over 10 half-marathons.

Storytelling is an important part of Imuetinyan’s life.As a child who did not read due to a poor eye condition,she looked forward to those cool nights when the power goes out.Though the adults saw power outrages as interruption to their favorite TV shows, for the children, it was story time.The darkness attracted the neighborhood children who strolled to her compound. Their tiny bodies would pile on top of brown weaving mats to listen to ancient tales under the moonlight. The valuable lessons from the stories were what gave colors and brightness to Imuetinyan’s dull world. Born and raised in Lagos, Nigeria, where she completed her secondary school education and went on to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Cazenovia College, Update State. Since is a playwright, author, and a training journalist. She produced and directed her first act which was a one-women show titled, The Hole Between My Legs, where she told the stories of two women and their experiences with female genital mutilation, FGM. Imuetinyan is a guest blogger for 28 Too Many, a non-profit organization whose fight is to eradicate FGM. In 2014, she was one of the hosts and contributing writers for The Young African Symposium: Standing on the Shoulders of Giants, hosted by the Council of Young African Leaders. She is currently a contributing writer for The Girls Education Initiative of Ghana- US Inc.,an education and disability advocacy organization based in NY with beneficiaries in Ghana. She recently launched her YouTube Channel where she continues to covers stories on Africa as a way to hone her broadcasting career and she is also working on her next play. Imuetinyan Ugiagbe presently lives in Baltimore, Maryland with her sisters.
